iam Legal Alliance is a Law as a Service (LaaS) platform spearheaded by the Siam LegalTech Center in Bangkok, Thailand.

The platform aims to re-invent how law firms are structured. Law firms are well known to be entrenched in old ways of doing business and seen as a bit of an archaic institution that is both elitist and highly centralised. At the same time, large law firms have big budgets that allow them to invest in marketing, mentorship and lawyer training - all of which are essential elements of creating a successful law firm. All of this is often far from reach by your average lawyer in a provincial city. Traditionally, for a lawyer to be successful, the only option is to relocate to Bangkok and join one of the big firms often with long hours, sacrificing personal time with their family.

This transplanting of all the high calibre lawyers also results in a “brain-drain” from all the provincial communities around Thailand. This also means there are very few lawyers in local communities that can provide pro bono work in order to improve access to justice (A2J). We believe that by empowering local lawyers in their home provinces, they are then equipped with the tools to tackle social justice issues as they would have more time and resources to contribute to their local communities.

Siam Legal Alliance is trying to resolve all this by creating a platform that will allow high calibre and willing lawyers to have access to interesting, diverse and sometimes challenging matters they would otherwise have no chance of doing in their small practice. The platform also aims at providing mentorship as well as training in order for lawyers to have room for growth within the ecosystem, much like any large law firm. Certain matters are marked with different levels of complexity and therefore require a certain amount of knowledge and experience to be able to complete. The platform aims to utilise a points system which are allocated to individual lawyers and a certain amount of points are required for each matter depending on complexities. Some matters require lawyers with a higher status and lawyers with lower score sheet can join to assist. All this arrangement can be done beforehand on the platform, allocating the fees to be distributed to each lawyer.
